PHP upgrade and security services

Australian businesses run websites that bring in enquiries around the clock, and many sit on hosting that has not been looked at since launch. A PHP upgrade is the quietest, cheapest way to close a serious hole.

PHP security in Australia

Small and medium businesses make up most of the Australian market, from trades and property to online retail and professional services. Many of those sites are WordPress or WooCommerce on shared or managed hosting where the PHP version is chosen once and forgotten. Two critical PHP flaws, CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619, were fixed in PHP 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36 and 8.2.35, and PHP 8.1 and older get no fix from the PHP project. Updating WordPress or plugins does not change the PHP version on your hosting.

Typical sites and what is at stake for each:

  • Trades and local services. Local service businesses rely on the website for calls and quote requests, yet rarely have anyone watching it.
  • Property and real estate. Property sites hold lead forms, enquiry histories and often agent logins, all of which attackers value.
  • Online retail. Online shops hold customer accounts and order histories, so a flaw that runs code on the server can expose far more than the storefront pages.

Regulation and expectations

The federal Privacy Act 1988 expects businesses to take reasonable steps to protect personal information (Australian Privacy Principle 11), and the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme requires eligible breaches to be reported to the OAIC and to the people affected. A server running an unpatched PHP version is difficult to describe as a reasonable step.

Scheduling across Australia

Australia spans three main time zones, from AWST (UTC+8) in the west to AEST/AEDT (UTC+10/+11) on the east coast. We schedule cut-overs for early morning or late evening in your time zone so trading hours are not disrupted. We work remotely through your hosting access.

What the upgrade covers

  • We check which PHP version your hosting runs and what depends on it
  • We copy the site, upgrade the copy and look for errors
  • We fix incompatible plugins, themes and custom code
  • We switch the live site and restart PHP so the fix is actually active
  • You get a dated summary of what changed

We scope the hours before we start, and the work is billed at your plan rate or the published hourly rate. See pricing and the PHP upgrade services overview.

Questions we hear

Do Australian businesses have to report a breach caused by an outdated PHP version?

If the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme applies to your business and a breach is likely to cause serious harm, you generally have to notify the OAIC and the people affected, whatever the technical cause. Patching PHP lowers the chance of getting there. This is general information, not legal advice.

What if a plugin will not work on the new PHP version?

We look for a maintained replacement or a newer version first. If neither exists, we can patch the specific lines that fail and tell you what changed.
